With 40 Nm of torque, the Somfy Orea 50 RTS 40/17 is one of the most powerful motors in the Orea 50 series and can even move large cassette awnings. If it loses power, it's rarely a total loss. In most cases, a fixed-price repair is sufficient, instead of replacing the entire motor.

Note regarding usability: As long as the motor is defective, your awning will remain in its last extended position. An extended awning cannot be retracted in windy or rainy conditions and is therefore particularly vulnerable. We recommend having any detected defect repaired promptly.

• The awning extends, but when retracting it stops under the weight of the fabric.
• The motor hums audibly and only starts turning when you assist it manually.
• When engaging the cassette, there is insufficient power to fully close it, but the drive responds normally to the radio transmitter.

This is explained by the design of the cassette awning: When extending, the spring-loaded articulated arms provide powerful assistance, so the motor hardly has to work. When retracting, it pulls the large fabric back against these springs alone, requiring the full power of the motor. If this power diminishes, it becomes apparent first during retraction, especially with this powerful drive. The cause is almost always a single defective component inside the drive, which we replace.

What happens during the repair

We open the drive unit, replace the defective component, and then test the Somfy Orea RTS 40/17 under load. Only when it retracts the awning quickly and with full power do we release it.

When another service is suitable

If the awning doesn't stay in its end position or the fabric retracts slightly on its own, the brake or gearbox is faulty. In that case, we'll replace the motor tube; we have a replacement part available for the Orea RTS 40/17. However, if the drive doesn't respond to the remote control at all or only reacts with a brief twitch, the radio electronics are defective, and we'll replace the motor head and control unit.
