Repairing Somfy Orea RTS 50/12: high-torque radio motor for large cassette awnings
The Somfy Orea 50 RTS 50/12 is the most powerful model in the Orea 50 series. With 50 Nm at 12 revolutions per minute, it moves even large and heavy cassette awnings powerfully and quietly. If it loses power, repair is almost always the better option than replacing the entire motor.
Note regarding usability: As long as the motor is defective, your awning will remain in its last extended position. An extended awning cannot be retracted in windy or rainy conditions and is therefore particularly vulnerable. We recommend having any detected defect repaired promptly.
Typical defects of the Orea RTS 50/12
- The awning extends, but when retracting, the heavy fabric either stops or retracts only sluggishly.
- The motor hums when Start and only begins to move when you manually assist it.
- When retracting, the drive lacks the power for the last few centimeters, but it responds normally to the radio transmitter.
The reason lies in the mechanics of the cassette awning: When extending, the spring-loaded articulated arms provide strong assistance to the motor. When retracting, the motor pulls the large fabric back against these springs alone; especially with this size, it has to exert its full force. If this force diminishes, it first becomes apparent when retracting. The cause is almost always a single defective component inside the drive unit, which we replace.
What happens during the repair
We open the drive unit, replace the defective component, and then test the Somfy Orea RTS 50/12 under load. Only when it retracts the awning powerfully and evenly do we release it.
When another service is suitable
If the awning doesn't stay in its end position or the fabric retracts on its own after stopping, the brake or gearbox is faulty. If the motor no longer responds to the remote control or can't be programmed, the radio electronics are defective. In both cases, a replacement is necessary, not a repair. Describe the problem to us via our repair request form, and we'll find the right solution.
