Repairing Somfy Orea 60 RTS 85/17: the powerhouse for very large cassette awnings
The Somfy Orea 60 RTS 85/17, with 85 Nm of torque, is the most powerful model in the Orea 60 series, operating at a fast 17 rpm. It moves very large and heavy cassette awnings and is designed for use with a 60 mm shaft. If its pulling force diminishes, repair is usually much more cost-effective than replacing the motor. We'll get it working again for a fixed price.
Note regarding usability: As long as the motor is defective, your awning will remain in its last extended position. An extended awning cannot be retracted in windy or rainy conditions and is therefore particularly vulnerable. We recommend having any detected defect repaired promptly.
Typical defects of the Orea 60 RTS 85/17
- When extending the awning, it still runs, but when retracting, the large fabric gets stuck or only comes back jerkily.
- The motor hums when switched on, but only starts turning once you manually push the awning a little bit.
- It lacks the strength just before reaching the closed state, while still accepting radio commands cleanly.
The reason for this is the interplay of forces within the cassette awning: When extending, the tensioned articulated arms noticeably relieve the motor, while when retracting, the motor rolls up the heavy fabric entirely on its own against the spring force. With the very large awnings for which this 85 Nm setting is designed, this requires the most power. If this power diminishes, it's first noticeable when retracting. The cause is almost always a single defective component inside the drive unit, which we replace.
What happens during the repair
We open the drive unit, replace the faulty component, and then test the Somfy Orea 60 RTS 85/17 under full load. Only when it retracts the awning effortlessly and evenly will it be returned to you.
When another service is suitable
If the awning doesn't stay securely in its end position, or if the fabric retracts slightly after stopping, the problem lies with the brake or the gearbox. If the motor no longer responds to the remote control or cannot be reprogrammed, the radio electronics are defective. In both cases, replacement is the only option, not repair. Describe the problem to us via our repair request form, and we'll find the right solution for you.
