Repairing Somfy Orea RTS 20/17: Radio-controlled motor for medium-sized cassette awnings
The Somfy Orea 50 RTS 20/17 is a versatile radio-controlled motor from the Orea 50 series and powers medium-sized cassette awnings. If it loses power, a replacement is rarely necessary. In most cases, a targeted repair at a fixed price is sufficient, and your programmed motor will be working again.
Note regarding usability: As long as the motor is defective, your awning will remain in its last extended position. An extended awning cannot be retracted in windy or rainy conditions and is therefore particularly vulnerable. We recommend having any detected defect repaired promptly.
Typical defects on the Orea RTS 20/17
- When extending, the awning works normally, but when retracting, it only retracts haltingly or not at all.
- The motor cuts out several times during the initial drive or gets stuck on the track.
- The power is no longer sufficient to fully retract the cloth, but the radio reception is fine.
The reason lies in the design of the cassette awning: The articulated arms, thanks to their springs, compress when extending, so the motor requires very little force. This is reversed when retracting, as the motor now pulls the fabric back against precisely this spring tension. A weak motor therefore first becomes noticeable during retraction. The culprit is usually a single defective component inside the motor, which we replace.
What happens during the repair
We disassemble the drive, replace the defective component, and then test the Somfy Orea RTS 20/17 under load. Only when the retraction mechanism runs smoothly and powerfully do we send it back.
When another service is suitable
If the awning retracts slightly on its own after being stopped, or if it doesn't stay in its end position, the problem lies with the brake or the gearbox. If the motor remains unresponsive to every radio command, the fault is in the radio electronics. Both of these defects require replacement, not repair. Please send us a brief repair request, and we will get back to you with the appropriate solution.
